artist statement
Will Zeng uses painting, performance, and object-making to explore subjectivity through the intersection of Asian American, masculine, and queer identities. Zeng engages contradictions between graceful and pathetic, shame and pleasure, representation and physicality, intimacy and distance as means of articulating a lived experience. His work currently explores the rice rocket and import racing culture as a signifier for the opportunities presented by the failure of the Asian American masculine subject.

Will Zeng grew up in San Francisco, California. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Studio Practice from the University of California of Davis and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Zeng has since worked for various art organizations in San Francisco including Root Division, the DeYoung, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. He is currently working towards a Master of Fine Arts degree at University of Oregon.
